Murchison River, River system in Western Australia.

The Murchison River is a river in Western Australia that rises far inland and flows westward through dry, rocky terrain before reaching the Indian Ocean near Kalbarri. Along the way, it has carved deep gorges into the red sandstone, creating some of the most dramatic rock formations in the state.

The river was named in 1839 by the explorer George Grey after Roderick Murchison, a Scottish geologist who was then president of the Royal Geographical Society. In the decades that followed, gold prospectors moved through the river valley in search of deposits, leaving behind traces of that era still visible in the landscape.

The Murchison River runs through the traditional country of the Yamatji people, who have lived in this region for thousands of years and maintain a deep connection to this land. In some spots along the river, rock engravings left by Aboriginal people can still be seen by those who walk slowly and look carefully.

The best time to visit is between April and October, when temperatures are lower and walking conditions along the gorges are more manageable. Good walking shoes with a firm grip are important because the rocky paths can be slippery, especially near the water's edge.

The rock layers exposed along the gorges are around 400 million years old and are among the oldest visible rock formations on the Australian continent. In some sections, fossil imprints of ancient sea creatures can be spotted with the naked eye, a reminder that this desert landscape was once an ocean floor.
