Oakajee Port, Deep water port project in Mid West region, Australia
Oakajee Port is a deep water port project located about 24 kilometers north of Geraldton in Western Australia's Mid West region. The development involves substantial land infrastructure along with planned rail connections and cargo handling facilities for bulk minerals.
The site functioned as a railway siding on the Northampton line from 1879 until 1957, then was later identified as a potential port location in the 1980s. The area evolved from its original rail function toward becoming a location for large-scale industrial infrastructure development.
The port project generated discussions between mining corporations, local residents, and environmental groups regarding regional development and conservation priorities.
The site is located in a sparsely populated region with limited direct public access to the development area. The project remains in early stages, so visible infrastructure at ground level is currently minimal.
Fortescue Metals Group worked with Sinosteel to explore reviving this long-suspended project through a cooperative agreement. The partnership reflects ongoing international industrial interest in bringing the development forward.
