Lynton Convict Hiring Depot, Heritage convict depot in Shire of Northampton, Australia.
Lynton Convict Hiring Depot consists of limestone foundations and structural remains located near the Hutt River mouth. The visible ruins show the outlines of multiple buildings that once functioned as a processing facility for transported convicts.
Established in 1853, this was the first convict facility north of Fremantle in Western Australia. The site operated as a distribution point where transported convicts were assigned to work at nearby mines and pastoral stations.
The depot supported regional development by distributing convict labor to the Geraldine Mine and local pastoral stations across Western Australia.
Access to the remains is through marked pathways with informational panels explaining the various building foundations. Plan to visit during fair weather since the site is fully exposed to the elements.
Thomas Leonowens worked here as a guard and his son Louis was born at this location. Years later, his wife Anna became a teacher to the royal children of Siam, revealing the surprising global connections of this remote depot.
