Pasar Senen, Traditional market in Central Jakarta, Indonesia.
Pasar Senen is a large market in the Senen district of Central Jakarta, Indonesia, divided into several blocks, each dedicated to a different type of goods. The range of products covers clothing, textiles, food, household items, and electronics, sold by both wholesale and retail traders.
The market was founded in 1733 by a Dutch trader named Vinck, and it was originally called Vinck Passer. It started as a Monday-only market, which is how it eventually got the name it carries today.
Pasar Senen takes its name from the Indonesian word for Monday, the only day it was open when it first started. Today, visitors can walk through sections where street food sellers work next to fabric vendors and small repair shops, giving the place a layered everyday rhythm.
The market is directly connected to the Transjakarta bus network and sits close to Senen train station, making it easy to reach by public transport. Going early in the morning tends to be more comfortable, as the place gets busier as the day goes on.
Block 3 of the market turns into a specialized fresh beef market during Ramadan, with vendors preparing meat specifically for the Eid al-Fitr celebrations. This seasonal shift gives that part of the market a very different feel from the rest of the year.
