Vice Presidential Palace, Government palace in Central Jakarta, Indonesia
The Vice Presidential Palace is a government palace in Central Jakarta, Indonesia, situated on Jalan Merdeka Selatan and combining classical Indonesian architectural elements with a shield-shaped roof and Doric design features. The complex is made up of two main buildings connected by several access points from two adjoining streets.
The building originally served as the residence of the president of De Javasche Bank during Dutch colonial rule. In 1973 it was converted into the office of the Vice President.
The palace holds a collection of traditional art and decorations from different regions of the Indonesian archipelago. Visitors who can access the open areas get a sense of the handcraft traditions found across the islands.
The palace sits in the heart of Jakarta along two main streets, making it straightforward to reach from different directions. Since it is an active government building, it is worth checking which parts are open to the public before visiting.
The second main building in the complex was constructed between 1988 and 1993 as an exact copy of the original colonial-era structure. The two buildings look so alike today that they are hard to tell apart at first glance.
