Soekarno–Hatta International Airport, International airport in Sepatan Timur, Indonesia.
Soekarno-Hatta is a large international airport in Sepatan Timur, Banten, serving Jakarta and the surrounding regions. The facility houses three passenger terminals spread across a wide complex, ranging from modern glass structures to older buildings with different architectural styles.
The airport opened in 1985 to replace the old Kemayoran Airport and was named after Indonesia's first president and vice president. It has since been expanded several times to keep up with rising passenger numbers.
Throughout the terminals, you can spot design elements borrowed from traditional Javanese houses called Joglo, which feature sloped wooden roofs and open pavilion shapes. These touches give waiting areas and corridors a local character that reminds visitors of Indonesia's building traditions.
Commuter trains, shuttle buses, taxis, and ride-sharing services connect the facility to central Jakarta and nearby areas. Terminals are linked by buses and walkways, but distances between buildings can be long, so allow extra time for transfers.
The airport maintains tropical gardens with palms and greenery between waiting halls and gates, designed by French architect Paul Andreu. These planted areas aim to make waiting more pleasant by offering passengers glimpses of local vegetation during their time before boarding.
