Kemaro Island, Buddhist temple complex on Musi River delta in Palembang, Indonesia
Kemaro Island is an island in the Musi River delta near Palembang that holds a religious complex with several structures. It features a Chinese temple with nine steps and a distinctive red pagoda located roughly 6 kilometers downstream from Ampera Bridge.
The island formed following the drowning of a Chinese prince and a local princess in this region according to local legend. Their graves still rest at the base of the temple, marking the site's sacred origins.
The temple complex serves as a gathering place where visitors can observe traditional Buddhist and Chinese practices being carried out by locals. The structures and their layouts show how different faiths coexist peacefully in this river community.
The island is accessible by speedboat from a river dock, with the journey taking around ten to fifteen minutes. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes as the paths around the temple complex can be damp and slippery in places.
The island maintains a dry surface throughout the year regardless of river water level changes. This remarkable quality sets it apart from other riverine formations in the delta system.
