Gelora Sriwijaya Stadium, Stadium Gelora Sriwijaya
Gelora Sriwijaya Stadium is a multi-purpose sports venue in Palembang, the capital of South Sumatra province in Indonesia. It holds around 40,000 spectators and has a main field that can be used for football as well as athletics.
The stadium was built in the late 1990s and later served as a main venue for the 2011 Southeast Asian Games and the 2018 Asian Games, which were co-hosted with Jakarta. These events placed Palembang on the international sports map for the first time.
The stadium takes its name from the Sriwijaya kingdom, which dominated much of Southeast Asia from Palembang around 1,300 years ago. This name connects modern sport with the city's pride in its ancient past.
The stadium sits within a large sports complex on the outskirts of Palembang and can be reached by car or by public transport. On match days, the surrounding area and access roads fill up well before kick-off, so arriving early is a good idea.
The stadium is home to Sriwijaya FC, a football club that was one of the strongest in Indonesia during the 2000s. Fans who pack the stands during home games are known as some of the loudest and most passionate in the country.
