Maung, Natural waterfall in Gumay Ulu, Indonesia
Maung is a waterfall in Gumay Ulu that plunges 80 meters between natural rock formations, creating two parallel streams of water. The water flows through dense vegetation near Rinduhati Village and creates a green curtain effect where it passes through thick vines.
The waterfall is part of the Lematang River system, which has sustained communities in South Sumatra across generations. The region developed through settlement and agriculture that depended on this natural water source.
The waterfall serves as a gathering place where residents of Rinduhati Village collect water and celebrate together as part of their daily life. These practices reflect how the community has long depended on this natural source for both survival and social connection.
The site is reached after a one-hour trek through coffee plantations and forest paths starting from the parking area at Padang Muaro Duo Village. Sturdy footwear and preparation for damp conditions are needed, as the forest is thick and paths can become slippery after rain.
Two additional smaller cascades are visible from the right side of the main waterfall, adding extra visual depth to the location. These side falls emerge from the rock formation's topography and flow separately into the pool below.
