Dempo, Active volcano in Tanjung Sakti Pumi, Indonesia.
Dempo rises above the Pasumah Plain in southern Sumatra and ranks among Indonesia's tallest active volcanoes. Its summit area contains seven craters and a crater lake roughly 400 meters wide.
At least 18 eruptions have been documented since 1817, most of them moderate in strength. The last event took place in 2009 and brought ash falls across the surrounding areas.
Local mountain communities maintain strong connections to Mount Dempo through generations of oral traditions and agricultural practices around its slopes.
Two routes lead to the summit: the Tugu Rimau trail starts at 1,850 meters elevation, while the Kampung Empat path is longer. Both routes require good fitness and are best attempted during the dry season.
Tea plantations climb into the middle elevations of the mountain and form an unusual contrast with the volcanic terrain above. In clear weather, the view from the summit stretches to the Bengkulu coast and Gunung Patah.
