Nhulunbuy, Administrative center in Northern Territory, Australia
Nhulunbuy is a town on the Gove Peninsula in northeast Arnhem Land, bordered by the Arafura Sea. It contains modern facilities and residential neighborhoods spread across the coastal landscape.
The town was established in 1964 following bauxite mining operations on traditional Yolngu land. A deep-water port was built to support the mining industry.
The Yolngu Aboriginal people maintain their languages and craft traditions as part of daily community life. Visitors can see these practices in how locals engage with the land and their surroundings.
Visitors need special permits to enter the region. Most arrive by plane through Gove Airport or by ship, as road access is limited.
The Arnhem Space Centre near the town is Australia's first equatorial satellite launch facility. It has hosted space missions since 2022.
