National Library of East Timor, National library and archives in Ai-Tarak Laran quarter, Dili, East Timor
The National Library of East Timor is the country's central public library and national archive, housed in a modern building in Dili. It brings together books, manuscripts, and audiovisual materials and makes them available to the public.
The institution was founded in 2009 by a government resolution, just a few years after the country gained independence in 2002. Construction of its own dedicated building in Dili began in 2017, giving it a permanent home for the first time.
The library holds texts in Tetum, Portuguese, and other local languages, reflecting the layered linguistic life of the country. Walking through the reading rooms gives a sense of how a young nation is actively building its own written memory.
The library is open to the public, but hours can be limited, so it is worth checking before you visit. The collection is still growing, so not all materials may be accessible at all times.
A large part of the founding collection was built through direct support from the National Library of Portugal, which donated numerous materials. This connection is still visible today in the Portuguese-language holdings, which form a notable part of the library's shelves.
