An-Nur Mosque, Islamic place of worship in Alor Village, Dili, East Timor.
The An-Nur Mosque is a two-story building in Alor Village with a prayer hall on the ground floor and educational rooms on the upper level. The building also includes ablution areas and a library holding Islamic texts for community use.
The mosque was founded in 1955 by Hasan Bin Abdulah Balatif, the leader of Alor Village. The building underwent major renovations in March 1981.
The mosque serves as a gathering place for the Muslim community in Dili and represents Islamic faith in East Timor. Visitors witness people of all ages meeting to pray and participate in religious classes together.
The site is easily accessible and provides open prayer spaces along with ablution facilities for visitors. It is respectful to wear modest clothing and be mindful of prayer times when visiting.
During Portuguese colonial rule, the mosque served the Muslim population as a private gathering place where they could discuss resistance and independence. This role reveals how religious buildings can hold broader social importance beyond their primary function.
