River Derwent, River estuary in Hobart, Australia.

The Derwent is a river in Tasmania that flows from the Central Highlands down to Storm Bay, passing through several reservoir lakes along the way. The waterway shapes the landscape between steep banks and eventually forms a wide estuary that reaches into Hobart's harbor.

The river was named in 1793 by John Hayes after British explorers charted the region and established the name in use today. The waterway served as a natural transport route for centuries, and later dams were built to harness its flow for power generation.

The Mouheneener people lived along the Derwent River Valley for over 8000 years, leaving archaeological evidence and artifacts that document their presence.

Multiple dams along the river make it possible to visit different sections and experience the waterway from various viewpoints. Many stretches are accessible from the land, and the lower section is open to boats, though water conditions can change depending on the weather.

The lower estuary forms Hobart Harbor, one of the deepest natural harbors in the Southern Hemisphere. This exceptional depth allows large ships to use the port and makes it a key stop for international vessels.
