Military Museum of Tasmania, Military heritage museum in Hobart, Australia.
The Military Museum of Tasmania occupies a former military prison building within the Anglesea Barracks complex on Davey Street. The structure retains its original layout while displaying weapons, uniforms, and personal items belonging to soldiers.
The building was constructed in 1847 as a military prison and forms part of Anglesea Barracks, which dates to 1814. Over time it served other purposes including a girls reformatory and married housing before becoming a museum.
The museum displays objects and documents connected to the service of Tasmanian people from 1899 onward. These collections tell the story of different generations who shaped military history here.
The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM and Sundays from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Two cannons mark the entrance and help you locate it easily.
Anglesea Barracks is one of Australia's oldest still-operational military establishments and has preserved its original 1814 layout. This remarkable preservation allows visitors to see a rare example of historical military infrastructure still in active use.
