Elizabeth Street Mall

Elizabeth Street Mall is a shopping center in downtown Hobart that spans one block between Collins Street and Liverpool Street, serving as the city's main retail hub. The space contains separate retail zones including the Wellington Centre with Woolworths and the Cat and Fiddle Arcade, which houses dozens of shops alongside Myer.

The mall took shape during the 1970s pedestrianization movement, when this street was transformed from a standard traffic route into a dedicated commercial zone. The project faced early resistance from business owners but ultimately succeeded in reshaping the city center.

Street performers and local musicians create a lively presence throughout the space, turning it into a natural meeting point for the city. People gather here as much for social connection as for shopping.
