Avalon Theatre, Hobart, Heritage theatre venue in Hobart, Australia.
The Avalon Theatre spans three floors in a prominent sandstone building with large windows and ornate architectural elements on Melville Street.
Built in 1889 as a Temperance Hall, the building transformed into the Bijou Theatre in 1922 before becoming the Avalon Theatre in 1932.
The theatre hosted womens suffrage meetings in 1892 and later became the first cinema in Hobart to screen movies with sound technology.
The heritage-listed building underwent renovations in 2022 under Hillsong Church ownership to create a modern performance space while maintaining historical features.
In 1966, the Avalon Theatre installed specialized 70mm projection equipment, making it the only theatre in Hobart capable of showing wide-format films.
