Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary National Park - Winaityinaityi Pangkara National Park, Coastal national park in South Australia.
Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary National Park is a coastal protected area with many different habitats such as seagrass meadows in shallow waters, mangrove forests, and saltmarsh areas. The landscape stretches for several dozen kilometers along Gulf St Vincent and creates suitable conditions for various bird and plant species.
The region was designated as a national park in 2017 and transformed former salt production areas into a protected natural site. This conversion allowed the landscape to once again serve as an important stopover for migrating birds.
The name Winaityinaityi Pangkara comes from the Kaurna language, showing the traditional connection of Aboriginal communities to this coastal region. People have been watching birds here for generations and use the landscape as an important place for their connection to nature.
Visitors can reach the site through several access points such as St Kilda foreshore or Thompson Beach. Parking areas and observation spots are available at the main entrances and provide good viewing opportunities.
The site is a critical point on one of the longest bird migration routes in the world and attracts tens of thousands of birds of different species annually. These traveling birds use the rest areas here to recover before continuing their long journey.
