The foundation stone was laid on 10 November 1912 by Archbishop John O'Reily, after a procession from St Francis Xavier's Cathedral with parish groups, the Guild Band and the Irish Piper's Band drew a crowd estimated at 10,000. The church opened on 15 March 1914, replacing the earlier St Patrick's, regarded as Adelaide's first Catholic church; Fr Patrick Hurley said the first Mass.
