Clarkesdale Bird Sanctuary, Nature reserve in Victoria, Australia.
Clarkesdale Bird Sanctuary is a nature reserve spanning 535 hectares that combines wetlands, woodlands, and grasslands in a single protected area. These diverse habitats support more than 150 bird species, including owls and honeyeaters.
The sanctuary began in 1975 when a sheep farmer and conservationist donated his initial parcel to a bird conservation organization. This founding commitment to protection has grown into a much larger protected landscape.
The place shows how local conservation efforts shape the land, with volunteer groups actively restoring habitats and planting native trees to support wildlife.
The reserve is accessed via Linton-Piggoreet Road near the Glenelg Highway, roughly 40 kilometers from Ballarat. Morning and late afternoon visits tend to offer the best conditions for seeing birds as they are more active during these times.
The reserve includes restored commercial orchards that have been transformed into native woodlands and artificial wetlands built specifically for bird habitat. This conversion of previously used land into natural space shows how disturbed areas can be brought back to life.
