Rocklands Reservoir, Reservoir and heritage site in Victoria, Australia
Rocklands Reservoir is a large water storage area near Balmoral in western Victoria, with several campgrounds and boat launch points spread along its shoreline. The site holds a Heritage Overlay status and serves both as a water supply source and a recreational area.
Construction of the dam started in 1941 but was interrupted during World War II, when the site was used as a military training ground. Work resumed after the war and the dam was completed in 1953.
Rocklands Reservoir draws anglers who come for the yellow belly perch and pike that live in its waters, making it a well-known fishing spot in Victoria. Many visitors arrive by boat and stay at one of the waterside campgrounds for several days at a time.
The main dam area and Glendinning Campground can be reached by standard vehicles, but other campgrounds around the reservoir require a four-wheel drive. It is worth checking which access tracks suit your vehicle before you set off.
Six location buoys float on the water to mark the positions of the main campgrounds for boaters arriving from the water. These markers help travelers identify which camping area they are heading toward without needing to go ashore first.
