Calder Park Raceway, Motorsport racing track in Victoria, Australia
Calder Park Raceway is a motorsport facility in Victoria with a drag strip, a road circuit, and a high-speed oval track. The complex offers several layouts including the 1.8 kilometer Thunderdome with steeply banked turns and a national circuit measuring just under 2.3 kilometers in length.
The facility began operations in 1962 when the Australian Motor Sports Club organized the first paved event at Diggers Rest. In 1988 the raceway hosted the first NASCAR race outside North America on the newly built Thunderdome track.
The oval track recalls American speedways and attracts fans who want to watch side-by-side racing at high speed through steeply banked turns. On race days the stands fill with spectators who come to experience the roar of engines and the smell of fuel up close.
Visitors can choose between different events, from club races on the shorter circuit to larger championship rounds on the full national layout. The site is located outside the city, so driving is recommended.
The Thunderdome features banking angles of 24 degrees, giving the oval an unusual tilt. This design was specifically built for high-speed racing in the American style and stands apart from most Australian tracks.
