Sunshine Mosque, Ottoman mosque in Victoria, Australia.
Sunshine Mosque is an Ottoman-style mosque located in the suburb of Sunshine, west of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia. It has a central dome over the prayer hall, two slender minarets, and an open courtyard that faces the qibla wall.
Construction began in 1992 and brought an Ottoman-influenced form of religious architecture to an Australian suburb for the first time in the area. The building was created in response to the growing Muslim population in western Melbourne, which needed a dedicated place of worship.
The mosque serves the Muslim community in western Melbourne as a daily gathering point for prayer and social meetings. Inside, the walls are decorated with geometric patterns and Arabic script that visitors notice as soon as they walk in.
Visitors are expected to wear modest, covered clothing before entering, and it is worth checking prayer times in advance as access may be limited during those periods. Shoes are removed at the entrance, so slip-on footwear makes the visit easier.
The mosque's minarets are visible from the surrounding streets and are among the first examples of Ottoman religious architecture built in Victoria. For many in the congregation, this was the first building of its kind they had ever entered in Australia.
