Caribbean Gardens, Garden and market in Scoresby, Australia
Caribbean Gardens is a garden and market complex in Scoresby, a suburb southeast of Melbourne, built around an artificial lake with walking paths and planted areas. A small narrow-gauge railway runs through the grounds and connects the different sections of the property.
The Spooner family bought the land in 1945 and set up a boat factory there, which is why the lake was originally dug on the property. Over time, the site shifted away from manufacturing and the garden and market activity gradually took over.
On weekends, the grounds host a large outdoor market where local sellers offer fresh produce, handmade goods, and secondhand items. The market draws families from across the southern suburbs of Melbourne and has become a regular weekend ritual for many locals.
The site is easy to explore on foot, with clear signage along the paths to help with orientation. On market days, arriving early in the morning gives you a better chance of finding parking and browsing before the crowds build up.
The lake on the grounds was not built for the gardens but was dug to test boats produced in the on-site factory before they went to market. Today, most visitors strolling along its banks have no idea that the water was once used to trial small vessels.
