3RRR, Australian radio station
3RRR, also known as Triple R, is a community radio station in Brunswick East, Melbourne, Victoria, broadcasting on 102.7 FM and on digital platforms. The station runs around 60 programs each week, most hosted by volunteers, covering music from pop to punk and jazz to metal, alongside talk shows on politics, health, and the environment.
The station started in 1976 as 3RMT, broadcasting from student studios at RMIT University, and took its current name after moving to Fitzroy in 1979. In 1981, it came close to shutting down due to financial trouble, but listeners and supporters raised enough money to keep it on air.
The name Triple R comes from the station's early ties to Fitzroy and RMIT University, a wordplay that still shapes how listeners talk about it today. Inside the Brunswick East building, local musicians and artists regularly pass through to record sessions, give interviews, or perform live.
The station is based in a converted building in Brunswick East that also contains a venue for live concerts, comedy, and theatre, so a visit can easily combine both radio and live events. Checking the events calendar ahead of time is a good idea, since performances take place regularly throughout the year.
The station's logo, created around 1981, appears on cars and bicycles all over Melbourne, yet no one knows for certain who designed it. This small detail says a lot about how deeply the station is woven into everyday life in the city.
