Cairn Curran Reservoir, lake in Australia
Cairn Curran Reservoir is a large water storage facility on the Loddon River west of the town of Maldon that serves farming, homes, and livestock. It features a main embankment with two spillways, the secondary one located about a couple of kilometers away, designed to control water flow and protect the dam structure.
Construction of the reservoir began in 1947 and was completed in 1956 to supply water for local farming, homes, and livestock along the Loddon River. The project was part of a broader water management initiative and has been managed by Goulburn-Murray Water since then.
The name 'Cairn Curran' comes from a large property established in the 1840s that was used for raising sheep and cattle. Today, the reservoir serves as a gathering place where the community comes together to enjoy outdoor activities like sailing, fishing, and picnicking.
Access to the water is easiest from the eastern side near the dam wall, where you'll find boat ramps, designated swimming zones, and canoe launch areas. The grounds offer several picnic spots with tables, toilets, and free barbecue facilities, with some areas open all day and others closing earlier.
The local sailing club welcomes new members and offers sailing lessons, allowing beginners and experienced sailors to learn or sail in a supportive community. The grounds are also used for events like family days and sports competitions, bringing the community together.
