Fryers Forest, Eco-village and nature reserve in Victoria, Australia
Fryers Forest is a residential community with about 11 private plots scattered within a larger nature reserve containing native bushland. The homes are small and discreetly integrated into the existing vegetation, while pathways and communal areas connect the different households.
The area experienced rapid growth during the 1851 gold rush, when mining settlements emerged along Fryers Creek and the region flourished. After gold mining declined, the area lost importance until it was redeveloped decades later as a nature reserve and sustainable residential project.
The community has built its identity around shared values of sustainable living, with residents creating spaces that reflect their commitment to working with nature rather than against it. You can see this reflected in how homes blend into the landscape and how communal areas are used for learning and connection.
Access to the area is via well-maintained paths that remain passable in wet conditions thanks to good drainage. Visitors should wear appropriate footwear and be aware that this is a private residential community where respecting boundaries is important.
The project was designed by Holmgren Design Services based on permaculture principles that bring natural and human systems together. This makes it a working example of how housing and nature conservation can coexist on the same land.
