Murray Downs Homestead, Heritage homestead in Murray Downs, New South Wales, Australia
Murray Downs Homestead is a rural dwelling built between 1866 and 1891 with rendered brick walls, corrugated iron roofs, and two-storey towers showing classical design influence. The complex includes several outbuildings such as workshops and a former schoolhouse that reveal the working and living arrangements of a large sheep station.
Settlement began in 1848 as a large pastoral lease on Crown Land covering thousands of hectares. Over the following decades under different ownership, it evolved into a substantial sheep station that thrived during the colonial era.
The homestead takes its name from the local landscape and early pastoral settlement of the region. Visitors can observe how life unfolded across the farm through the arrangement of workshops, dwellings, and farm buildings that still dot the property.
The property sits on Moulamein Road and operates as a private hobby farm with limited public access. Visitors wishing to explore the site should arrange visits in advance with the owners.
During its peak around 1889, roughly 79,000 sheep were sheared on the property annually, showing the station's enormous productive scale. This level of operation reflected how significant the enterprise had become in Australia's pastoral economy.
