Murray River road and railway bridge, Tocumwal, Iron truss railway bridge in Tocumwal, Australia

The Murray River road and railway bridge is an iron truss structure spanning the Murray River with three sections supported by two piers in the water. The middle span features a vertical-lift mechanism designed to open for river traffic when needed.

The structure opened in 1895 for road traffic and was adapted in 1908 to also serve the railway line connecting the region. Rail operations ended in 1987, though road use continued afterward.

The structure shaped life on both riverbanks and served as a working link between the two states for over a century, becoming part of local identity.

The structure is accessible from the road and offers good views of the river and surrounding landscape. You can walk across it and see the construction details from different angles.

The vertical lift span was raised monthly to check for river navigation until this practice stopped in 1977. These regular openings were a remarkable sight for locals during their working life.
