Sandy Bay, Coastal district in Hobart, Australia
Sandy Bay is a coastal district south of Hobart's center that stretches along the Derwent River and includes three beaches: Nutgrove Beach, Long Beach, and Lords Beach. The area combines residential neighborhoods with schools and retail spaces connected to the city center via Sandy Bay Road.
The land was originally home to the Mouheneenner people until European settlers received land grants in the early 1800s. These grants led to the transformation of the region into a residential area that developed over subsequent decades.
The University of Tasmania shapes the district with its campus presence and draws students from across the region. Schools including Fahan, The Hutchins, and Mount Carmel College have made the area an important educational center.
The district is easily accessible by public transport and car, as Sandy Bay Road provides a direct connection to the city center. Visitors can find parking at the beaches and near schools and shopping areas.
The Wrest Point Hotel Casino, which opened in 1973, was Australia's first legal casino and remains the highest building in Hobart. Its distinctive silhouette towers above the city and is visible from many spots in the district.
