Squeaky Beach, beach in Victoria, Australia

Squeaky Beach is a sand beach in Wilsons Promontory National Park on Victoria's southern coast, known for its fine white quartz sand and the distinctive squeaking sound it makes underfoot. The beach stretches wide with clear blue-green water and is flanked by smooth granite rock formations at both ends.

The area around Squeaky Beach was home for long periods to the Gunai/Kurnai people, who held deep cultural connections to the land and sea. The location became known to settlers in later times and is now preserved as a protected national park.

The beach takes its name from the squeaking sound the fine quartz sand makes underfoot as people walk across it. Visitors pause to experience this unusual natural phenomenon together, making the sound itself a memorable part of what draws people to the place.

Arrive early in the day as parking fills up quickly during peak times, and consider visiting in quieter seasons if possible. Keep in mind there are no lifeguards on duty here and strong currents exist, so caution in the water is essential and swimming should stay close to shore.

The squeaking sound comes from the way rounded quartz grains rub against each other when compressed under pressure from footsteps. This phenomenon is not found everywhere and makes each step an unusual sensory experience.
