Walhalla

Walhalla is a former mining town nestled in the mountains of Victoria, situated about 180 km east of Melbourne in the Stringers Creek valley. The town sits in rugged terrain and retains structures from its gold-seeking past.

The town arose in 1862 following a major gold strike and boomed during the mining era with thousands of residents at its peak. Decline came when gold became harder to extract, leaving behind a shadow of its former size.

Italian settlers arrived in the late 1800s and left their mark on local building styles and place names that visitors still see today. Walking through town, you notice how their presence shaped the character of the place.

The mountainous setting means visitors should expect steep paths and changing weather, especially during cooler months. Sturdy footwear and appropriate clothing make exploring the historical sites more comfortable.

The Long Tunnel Extended Mine is one of the longest shafts from the gold rush era, allowing visitors to descend into the darkness and feel how miners worked. Many overlook that original tools and marks left by workers remain visible inside.
