National Carillon, Bell tower in Canberra, Australia
The National Carillon is a bell tower on Aspen Island in Lake Burley Griffin, built with white concrete elements and a hexagonal floor design. It stands approximately 50 meters tall and houses 55 bronze bells ranging in size.
The bell tower was presented as a gift from the British government to Australia in 1970 to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Canberra's establishment as the capital. This gift symbolized the historical connection between Britain and Australia.
Regular concerts demonstrate the carillon as a living musical tradition that draws people together. These performances show how this instrument remains an active part of local cultural life.
Visitors reach the site via a footbridge connecting Kings Park to the island in the lake. The best time to visit is on days when concerts are scheduled so you can hear the bells perform.
A dining room with kitchen facilities sits in the upper section and can be rented for events, offering sweeping views over the lake and city. This hidden space is often overlooked despite offering an exceptional venue for special occasions.
