Hotel Kurrajong, Heritage hotel building in Barton, Australia
Hotel Kurrajong spans two floors in a garden pavilion style, featuring separate wings connected by corridors around central garden courtyards.
The hotel opened in 1926 to accommodate public servants during the relocation of Parliament from Melbourne to Canberra, designed by architect John Smith Murdoch.
The building reflects the architectural principles of Walter Burley Griffin's garden city concept, integrating nature with governmental infrastructure in early Canberra.
Located near government institutions, the hotel provides 145 rooms, a restaurant, and function spaces while maintaining its original architectural elements.
Former Prime Minister Ben Chifley lived at the hotel from 1940 until 1951, when he experienced a fatal heart attack in room 205.
