Porters Ski Area, Ski resort in Selwyn District, New Zealand.
Porters Ski Area is a ski resort in the Selwyn District of New Zealand's South Island, located in the Torlesse Ranges of the Southern Alps. The terrain includes open slopes for beginners, intermediate runs, and steeper sections for more experienced skiers.
Porters opened in the 1970s and was one of the first organized ski areas within reach of Christchurch. Over the following decades it expanded its lift infrastructure and became a regular winter destination for people across the Canterbury region.
Porters is known among Canterbury locals as a place where many people learn to ski for the first time, with a friendly and relaxed feel on the slopes. School groups and families from Christchurch make up a large part of the crowd on winter weekends.
The ski area sits roughly 90 km (56 mi) from Christchurch along State Highway 73 and is most easily reached by car. The area is compact, so getting around the slopes and facilities does not take long once you arrive.
Porters has a dedicated beginner area called Happy Valley, which is set apart from the main slopes and designed specifically for first-timers. This separation means new skiers can practice without worrying about faster traffic coming down from above.
