St James Church, Franz Josef

St James Church stands with board-and-batten walls, a corrugated iron roof, and a castellated bell tower painted in dark brown exterior.

The church foundation stone was laid by Lord Bledisloe in February 1931, followed by its dedication ceremony on April 26 by Bishop West-Watson.

The church continues its Anglican religious services within the Ross and South Westland parish, connecting the local community through regular gatherings.

Located on State Highway 6 at Waiho Gorge, the church maintains clear plate glass windows that provide views over the Waiho River.

The church gained national recognition when its altar view appeared on a 1946 Peace stamp commemorating the end of World War Two.
