TranzAlpine, passenger train in New Zealand
The TranzAlpine is a train service between Christchurch and Greymouth on New Zealand's South Island, taking approximately five hours to cover 223 kilometers (139 miles). The train travels through flat Canterbury Plains, mountain passes, the Otira Tunnel, and emerges into dense beech forests on the wetter West Coast.
The service began operating on November 22, 1987, replacing older train connections between the two cities. It was created to attract tourists and showcase the region's natural beauty.
The train connects the two coasts of the South Island, allowing travelers to experience different New Zealand landscapes in a single day. The journey reflects how the land shapes the way people live and relate to their environment.
The train features panoramic windows in all cars and offers different seating classes, including Scenic Plus with better onboard meals. Stations along the route provide parking information and access details, and travelers can book easily online or by phone.
The train is often traveled both ways in a single day, allowing passengers to experience both routes at once. The Staircase Viaduct and Otira Tunnel are among the tallest and longest structures on the line and contribute to the dramatic journey.
