Antrim House, Residential building in Wellington Central, New Zealand.
Antrim House is a two-story residential building in central Wellington, New Zealand, built mainly from totara wood and topped by a central tower with an iron crown. The building follows the Edwardian style and contains around 18 rooms arranged across its two floors.
The house was built in 1905 for Robert Hannah, a businessman who had grown his shoe trade into a chain of ten stores and a factory. His commercial success gave him the means to build one of the most notable private homes in Wellington at the time.
Antrim House has pressed metal ceilings and hand-crafted kauri wood panels that are still in their original state. The leadlight windows and the grand staircase show how carefully local craftspeople worked at the beginning of the 20th century.
The building sits in central Wellington and is easy to reach on foot from the main streets of the city center. A major restoration completed in May 2024 has left the structure in good condition, so the exterior details are clearly visible from the street.
Antrim House holds a Heritage New Zealand Category 1 listing, which places it among the most protected buildings in the country. During the recent restoration, the dome had to be fully rebuilt because it had deteriorated beyond repair over the decades.
