Majestic Centre, Office skyscraper in Wellington, New Zealand
The Majestic Centre is a 116-meter office tower with 29 floors and a curved exterior wrapped in blue glass and aluminum panels. The structure incorporates the preserved facade of an older building into its modern design, creating a layered architectural composition.
The building was completed in 1991 on the site of the former Majestic Theatre, which operated from 1929 to 1984. The theater's closure marked the end of an entertainment era in Wellington before the modern tower rose in its place.
The building preserves part of Wellington's past by keeping the historic Preston's Building facade, an Edwardian Classical structure, as part of its design. Visitors can see how the old front blends with the modern glass tower, showing how the city respects its heritage while moving forward.
The tower stands on Willis Street in Wellington's central business district and is easily accessible from downtown. Most interior spaces are restricted to businesses and tenants, though the exterior and street-level areas can be viewed freely.
The tower holds a special place in global architecture as the southernmost building in the world taller than 100 meters. This geographic distinction reflects the city's ambition to build at significant heights despite its remote southern location.
