Originally constructed in 1930 as a steel-framed reinforced concrete building, the property required deep foundation piles due to substantial blue clay deposits discovered during excavation.
The third-floor balcony of the Hotel St. George gained recognition when the Beatles greeted their fans during their 1964 New Zealand tour.
The establishment currently operates as a boarding-style accommodation, offering various room types with shared facilities including a self-catering kitchen and common lounge.
The building transformed from a premier hotel hosting international celebrities to student housing before receiving its Heritage New Zealand Category 2 historic place designation.
