Paraparaumu, town in New Zealand
Paraparaumu is the main town on the Kāpiti Coast and serves as a commercial hub with shops, cafes, and restaurants near the railway line. The town extends west toward the coast where Paraparaumu Beach offers a long sandy shore and grassy parks including Maclean Park for visitors to enjoy.
The town began as a farming community and later developed into a holiday destination, which explains many of its older buildings. In the 20th century it grew into a transport hub with railway connections to Wellington and became home to commuters and local residents.
The name Paraparaumu comes from Maori language and means "eagle's landing place". Today the town reflects a relaxed coastal culture where locals and visitors gather regularly at the beach, markets, and sports grounds that anchor community life.
Getting there is straightforward as the town sits on the train line from Wellington with regular service. You do not need a car since buses, dedicated bike paths, and flat walking routes make moving around town and reaching the beach easy.
Film director Peter Jackson attended secondary school at Kapiti College here, which draws fans of his work to the town. The place is also known for its respected beach golf course where major tournaments have been held.
