Parliament House, Wellington, Neoclassical government building in Wellington, New Zealand
Parliament House is a neoclassical structure with Tākaka marble cladding on the facades and Coromandel granite base. The building features a grand colonnade and wide steps at its main entrance.
The original building was destroyed by a devastating fire in 1907. Architect John Campbell designed the new structure, which opened in 1922.
The interior features green leather seating and green carpets designed after the British House of Commons pattern. This color scheme reflects the democratic traditions that shape this place.
The House offers free guided tours to visitors, and everyone must pass through security screening before entering the complex. It helps to allow time for the security process, especially during busy periods.
Two carved wooden pou depicting Ngake and Whātaitai stand at the front since 2023. These figures show the connection to Māori tradition of harbor guardians.
