Museum Hotel de Wheels is a hotel in Wellington, New Zealand, that combines artworks and historical details throughout its interior spaces. The building was completed in 1987 and now contains 180 rooms plus self-contained apartments designed for extended stays.
The building was constructed in 1987 and initially called the Michael Fowler Hotel before being purchased by businessman Chris Parkin in 1992. The property underwent several name changes over the years and became QT Wellington in 2017, though it gained fame through its relocation in 1990.
The hotel reflects the art passion of its owners and displays around 200 artworks throughout its spaces, shaping the appearance of the entire place. Visitors notice the special Gallery Rooms where contemporary art installations merge the everyday hotel experience with cultural expressions.
The hotel sits near Cable Street offering easy walkability for visitors exploring the city center on foot. Being a historically significant building, guests should expect older architectural features and more compact spaces in certain areas.
The building is one of the largest structures ever physically moved, relocated about 80 meters in 1990 to make space for the Museum of New Zealand. The five-month relocation was executed so carefully that not a single item inside was damaged during the process.
