Gisborne Botanical Gardens, Botanical garden in Gisborne District, New Zealand
Gisborne Botanical Gardens spans 5.1 hectares (12.6 acres) along the Taruheru River and displays both native and cultivated plant species throughout its layout. The grounds are organized into distinct sections that showcase different types of vegetation and plant collections.
The gardens were established in 1874 as Gisborne's first public recreational area and originally hosted cricket matches. When cricket activities relocated to Victoria Domain in 1901, the space transformed into a proper botanical garden.
The gardens are divided into three sections honoring sister cities: Gisborne Victoria, Nonoichi Ishikawa, and Palm Desert California, each displaying plants typical of those regions. Walking through these areas lets you experience how different climates shape the plants people grow around the world.
Multiple entry points provide access around the gardens, with footbridges connecting to adjacent parklands. Picnic areas and playground facilities are available throughout, making it convenient for spending several hours exploring.
The gardens hold an impressive collection of older specimen trees such as Pin Oak, Maidenhair Tree, Blue Atlas Cedar, and Tulip Tree that many visitors overlook. These trees have matured over many decades and create interesting visual contrasts among younger plantings.
