Titirangi, Historical hill in Gisborne, New Zealand
Titirangi rises above Gisborne and offers several viewpoints with views across Poverty Bay and the surrounding city. The 33-hectare reserve contains walking trails, fitness courses, and the James Cook Observatory for astronomy activities.
Captain James Cook made his first landing in New Zealand here in October 1769, an important moment in early European exploration. The event shaped the later settlement and development of the region.
The hill is a sacred place for the Māori people, particularly for the Ngāti Oneone whānau. At the foot of the mountain stands Te Poho-o-Rawiri Marae, which displays carved artwork and traditional culture.
The hill is accessible via various tracks and suits visitors with different ability levels. The clearest views from the different viewpoints come during daylight hours when visibility is best.
A pohutukawa tree planted by Princess Diana stands on the hill and remembers a famous visitor. Nearby sits a World War II gun emplacement that shows how the location was once defended.
