Gardner's Gut

Gardner's Gut is a cave system stretching over 12 kilometers through passages within the Ruakuri Caves and Bush Scenic Reserve in the Waikato region. The limestone network features multiple chambers and routes that create a complex underground landscape.

The cave system formed through limestone dissolution over thousands of years and ranks among New Zealand's most significant underground formations. The Department of Conservation manages this natural landmark, which is the sixth largest cave system in the country and the largest on the North Island.

Local Maori people discovered these limestone caves during the late 19th century, recognizing them as places of natural significance within their traditional lands.
