George Fistonich founded Villa Maria in 1961 by leasing land from his parents in Mangere, Auckland, laying the foundation for what became a major wine producer. The company expanded over the following decades into one of New Zealand's most significant winemaking operations.

The winery blends long-established New Zealand winemaking practices with current techniques to create wines that capture the distinct character of each region where grapes are grown.
