Auckland Libraries, public library system for Auckland, New Zealand
Auckland Libraries is a library network spread across the Auckland region in New Zealand, holding books, newspapers, maps, and photographs. The branches are distributed throughout the region and offer free internet access alongside free membership for borrowers.
The network traces its roots to 1880, when the Auckland Mechanics' Institute helped launch a public library movement across the region. In 2010, seven separate local library systems were merged into a single regional organization.
Many branches host storytimes for children and book clubs for adults, drawing people from nearby streets and neighborhoods into a shared space. These regular gatherings make the libraries a natural part of daily life for many Auckland residents.
Membership and borrowing are free, making the network accessible to anyone in the region without prior registration costs. Those living in smaller towns or rural areas can also use the mobile library service, which travels to locations not served by a fixed branch.
The network holds the Sir George Grey Special Collections, which include the first book ever printed in New Zealand and the original handwritten lyrics of the national anthem. Parts of this collection carry UNESCO Memory of the World status and can be browsed online.
