Hundertwasser Art Centre, Art center in Whangārei, New Zealand.
The Hundertwasser Art Centre is an art museum in Whangārei built as an architectural structure with unconventional shapes, rooftop gardens, and colorful mosaic decoration. Inside, multiple floors contain exhibition spaces, galleries showing original artwork, educational facilities, and performance venues.
The center began in 1993 when Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser proposed converting the former Northland Regional Council building into an artistic space. This transformation realized a long-held vision for artistic expression in the location.
The Wairau Māori Art Gallery creates a dedicated space for contemporary indigenous artworks curated by specialists from the local community. Visitors experience how the building itself reflects artistic vision through its decorative elements and garden spaces.
The center is open daily and provides access to exhibition spaces, learning facilities, theater, café, and gift shop throughout the building. Plan to spend time exploring the multiple floors and different sections at a comfortable pace.
This is the final authentic Hundertwasser building completed anywhere in the world, containing 80 original artworks by the Austrian artist. The collection displays the full range of his artistic practice in a single location.
