The Hydro Majestic Hotel is a large building perched on a high cliff in Medlow Bath, New South Wales, overlooking the Megalong Valley. The structure blends Art Deco styling with older architectural elements and is defined by its distinctive dome, which serves as an event hall.
The hotel was founded when Mark Foy purchased the land in 1902, which previously held several structures including the Belgravia Hotel from 1891. It opened in 1904 as a health resort and later transformed into a luxury destination, while also serving as a military hospital during World War II.
The hotel takes its name from the mineral springs that Mark Foy originally sought to develop. Visitors can see the grand Casino building today, which serves as an elegant reception hall and performance space rather than for gambling.
The hotel is easily accessible from central Sydney by public transport and provides on-site parking for visitors. The best time to visit is outside school holidays when crowds are lighter and the valley views are clearest.
The hotel's distinctive dome was shipped in its entirety from Chicago and transported up the mountain by bullock wagon before being reassembled on site. This remarkable feat made the building an architectural landmark decades before modern transport made such undertakings routine.
